Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
