The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of his move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
