Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
