American Attack on Caracas Raises Anxieties of Potential Greenland Annexation.

Recent American military action in Venezuela and the seizure of its president have ignited unease regarding America's designs on Greenland. Followers of the ex-president's political movement have allegedly focused on the resource-rich island in the wake of the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Provocative Messages and Diplomatic Outrage

Merely a short time following the start of the Caracas campaign, a prominent conservative commentator, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential adviser, shared a suggestive map. The picture showed Greenland covered in the American flag, with the single-word message: "COMING."

This blatant threat to absorb the mineral-rich region, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered immediate and strong condemnation from Danish officials.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to work together as such. American security is also Greenland’s and our security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the US work together to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The diplomat further highlighted that the kingdom had significantly increased its defence spending this year, earmarking a large amount expressly for Arctic and North Atlantic defence. "Furthermore, we expect complete respect for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he emphasized.

Political Moves and Strategic Interests

The situation were further exacerbated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The appointee had publicly thanked the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "honour" to serve in a unpaid capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the military action in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's decisive move, connecting it to the broader "war on drugs."

Ever since assuming office, the American leader has repeatedly unnerved European allies with his stated desire in Greenland. The island is considered vitally strategic for defence and future resource extraction. It currently hosts the most northerly US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant television appearance, the leader refused to exclude the resorting to armed action to acquire Greenland. This position comes during intensifying great-power rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Friction and Indigenous Resistance

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of threats, Danish intelligence service took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of both Greenland issued a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a complex sentiment. While a vast majority of the island's residents seek self-rule from Denmark, there is simultaneously scant desire to join the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare independence for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Credible Scenario?

Military analysts are now re-evaluating the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank director specializing in defence admitted she had previously discounted the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a couple thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could do anything about it," she concluded.
