A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
